Dangerous Storm Outbreak Eyes Great Plains Today

There will be no shortage of dangerous weather patrolling the Great Plains and Mississippi Valley today. A major storm outbreak, in fact, will not only deliver destructive large hail and high winds, but a couple of long-track and violent tornadoes will also be in play as well from northern Texas to central Nebraska.

Driving today's potentially destructive and widespread severe storm outbreak will be the consolidation of low pressure across the western High Plains of Kansas and Nebraska. Aided by a boost of upper-level energy exiting the Intermountain West and southern Rocky Front Range, individual thunderstorms will explode from central Texas to South Dakota by the middle of this afternoon.

In fact, the severe weather risk is so great the government's Storm Prediction Center has placed extreme southern Nebraska, central Kansas, central Oklahoma and far north-central Texas within a Moderate Risk for an organized and potentially widespread severe weather outbreak this afternoon into tonight.

That will mean cities such as McCook, Neb., Colby, Garden City and Wichita, Kan., and Oklahoma City, Norman, Lawton and Edmond, Okla., will all need to be on high alert for violent thunderstorms packing damaging wind gusts up to 80 mph, hail greater than baseballs and a couple of long-track and violent tornadoes.

Even outside this elevated severe weather danger zone, powerful thunderstorms preceding a cold front dividing warm and very humid air from cooler and drier air in its wake will target cities from Grand Forks and Bismarck, N.D., to Omaha, Neb., and Dallas to Abilene, Texas. Here, high winds ranging from 60-to-70 mph, golf ball sized hail and several tornadoes, even a few of which could be intense, are all possible.

In addition to the severe weather threat, the most intense thunderstorms will easily drop a quick 1-to-3 inches of rain in a short time. Combined with possible thunderstorm debris blocking storm drains, as well as excess runoff, the risk for areas of flash flooding will only grow today across the Plains. Flash Flood Watches stretch across western and north-central into northeastern Texas, including Dallas-Fort Worth and Oklahoma City.

The severe weather threat will shift into the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and Ohio and Missouri valleys to close out the weekend on a busy note.

The Twin Cities, Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wis., Rockford to Peoria, Ill., and St. Louis could all end up in the path of a dangerous thunderstorm or two on Sunday afternoon and evening. Unlike today though, the chief concerns will be gusts of 60-to-65 mph and a few tornadoes. However, a few large hail reports will be possible as well.
